Testimonials
For many people, gardening is a favourite hobby. But few have the talent, determination and commitment to turn that hobby into a successful career.
When local housewife and mother-of-two Amanda Colberg first set up Garden Design and Creation back in the spring of 1999, little did she realise just how successful her new venture would become. A professionally trained garden designer and former Chelsea Flower Show exhibitor, Amanda secured her first commission whilst still studying for her horticultural diploma – and has never looked back.
Five years on, with more than sixty garden designs to her credit, Amanda’s experience extends to gardens of every size and style, from compact courtyard designs to her latest project – redesigning the grounds of a listed Georgian manor house, incorporating everything from a formal garden with fountain to a delightful orangery. But whatever the project, she encourages her clients’ input from the outset.
“Whilst I obviously have my own ideas about what will work, it’s crucial that I know what my clients want from their gardens”, says Amanda. “Are they keen gardeners themselves, or do they want something that will stay looking good with minimal effort? Are there particular plants or features they’d like included, or are they happy to give me a free rein? Whatever their requirements or preferences, I need to know from the start so that I can include them in my design”.
Amanda’s believes that one important key to her success was her early decision to offer clients an initial consultation completely free of charge and without obligation. “If people are to put their gardens in your hands, they have to trust you”, she explains. “They need to meet you, see the colour of your eyes and chat through a few ideas before they decide whether or not you’re the person for the job.
After all, redesigning a garden is a long-term investment – something that should enhance not only the value of your property, but also your enjoyment of it. You have to be sure that the person you choose to do it is totally committed to getting it right”.
Once commissioned, Amanda’s real work begins, progressing from a full site survey through detailed pencil drawings to a finished scale design where every square inch has been considered and every plant chosen with meticulous care. Then, when her design has finally been approved and accepted, Amanda puts her clients in touch with all the craftsmen they will need to turn the dream into reality. And – if required – she’ll even handle the planting herself!
These days, Amanda receives commissions from clients across an increasingly wide area. But, having recently moved with her family from Pulborough to a newly-built house in Angmering, her next project is likely to be a lot closer to home, and she relishes the idea of unleashing her creativity on her own garden.
“Gardening’s not just my job, it’s my passion”, she enthuses. “There’s nothing like seeing one of my studio designs actually come to life in someone’s garden – and I love the idea that something I have created will go on giving pleasure for generations to come”.
